    Unhappy

    Hi All:

I just got the new Cartech 2020 FMU, the replacement for the 20005 unit.

I installed it this morning and am having some trouble:

    1) Without the restrictor in vacuum/boost line going from the JR manifold to the unit, I could not get the rise rate to drop any lower than 5.5:1 or so.

    2) With the restrictor installed, I was able to get roughly the rise rate that I wanted, but the unit does not seem to respond nearly as quickly with the restrictor installed. This is causing me some problems with tip-in detonation.

    3) After installing the restrictor and adjusting for roughly 85 psi of max fuel pressure, I tested it a bit more. I found that if I "cruise" at 6000 rpm and nail the gas, fuel pressure instantly shoots up to about 105 psi and stays there. WTF?? eek

Does placement of the restrictor matter? I pushed it into the hose right in front of where it hooks up to the FMU inlet.

Does direction of the restrictor matter? Cartech said that it didn't, but the restrictor has a "slash" cut into it on one side.

Overall, the hole in the restrictor is tiny compared to the hole in the FMU inlet nipple. It seems like it'd be worth my time to make some restrictors with progressively larger holes to fine tune the unit.

    Help!

    Thanks,
    Sonny

Sonny, just curious, what is different between the 2020 unit and the 2005 one?

00ITR006: I bought it directly from Cartech. Price was $199. For awhile, they were offering the 2020 at the 20005 price. I am not sure if this special is still in effect.

quadlamp: For a summary of differences, look for the post titled "Cartech 2020/2025 tour" that I posted a couple of days back.

Note: The new Cartech has a higher rise rate built into it than the older one. No restrictor seems to yield about ~5.5:1 to ~7.5:1.

Corky Bell (the designer) confirmed this on the phone today. You will have to run the restrictor, regardless of boost levels. Or, you can send the unit back (like I am doing) and Corky can modify it so that you can run the desired rise rate without having to use the restrictor. biggrin

Tell us more about this modification that Corky Bell is doing to yours.

I might be interested. Do you know what he's going to do?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Greg:

Corky wouldn't go into too much detail about what he was going to do. I thought maybe he would change the spring or height of the piston, but it sounds like he is going to do some work on the bottom part of the unit.

The restrictor has allowed me to get the rise rate I want, but it has introduced 2 other problems:

    1) Tip-in knock has reared its ugly head again
    2) During WOT runs, immediately after hard shift, the car will momentarily bog.

These problems were not present until I installed the restrictor. The size of the hole in the restrictor is tiny! With it in there, I don't think the Cartech can respond as quickly as it needs to. During a WOT run, the throttle plate is wide open and when you shift, it slams shut for a second (Cartech sees vacuum), and then it slams back open.

I'm sending it off today and I'll let you know what I find out. I haven't played with the 20005 unit, but with the 2020, running without the restrictor seems to be the way to go if you can achieve the desired rise rate. That is what Corky is going to do for me. smile

Sonny, I'm sure you will take it apart once it's modified to find out what Corky did. Right? smile

I get that same bogging problem after shifts (except I'd call my bog HUGE) when I have the restrictor in.

I'm currently running without the restrictor (and no other FPR besides the Cartech). The bog is gone, but my max FP is way too high. I'm hoping that adding an AEM FPR will let me use the retrictor and not bog.

If not, it'll be my turn to experiment.
